What is a SSL Certificate?

SSL or Secure Socket Layer is a security protocol, but a SSL certificate is a digital signature, that permits to encrypt communications in online data transactions using a web browser or another protocol (FTP, for example), depending on their configuration. In the case of websites, it would encrypt the data sent between the server and visitor, making the transactions of data between them more secure, like for example contact data, passwords or even financial information.
