Redemption Period
All the domain extensions have a life cycle. During this life cycle, the domains goes through different periods. At the end of the life cycle is not renewed, it is released by the Registry.
What is the Redemption Period status of a domain?
The Redemption Period is the period in which the domain is once the Renew Grace Period has passed.
During the Redemption Period, the domain cannot be renewed in the usual way and it is necessary to start a recovery process of the domain. The recovery of a domain in this period has an additional fee, this procedure has the name of Restore. Depending on the extension, the cost of Restore can include the price of renewal or not.
How long is the Redemption Period status?
The Redemption Period can vary depending on the extension. In the case of .COM domains, for example, this period lasts for 30 days from the end of the previous period (Renew Grace). On the information page of each domain extension you can see all the information about it.
How can I know if my domain is in the Redemption Period?
To find out if your domain is in the Redemption Period, you should access the domain management panel and view its status. You can do this from your client area, in the section 'Domains' > My domains, click on the domain to access your control panel. If the domain is in the Redemption Period, you will be able to see its status as in the following image.
You can also check if the domain is in this status by performing a WHOIS search on it. You can perform this WHOIS lookup from https://lookup.icann.org/lookup. You should check the 'Domain Status' parameter. If it is in this state, you will be able to view 'On-hold (redemption period)' in the WHOIS lookup.
How to renew a domain that is in Redemption Period?
To renew a domain that is in the Redemption Period, you must contact us from the customer support center by ticket, we will generate the corresponding invoice and once it has been paid we will proceed to recover it.
If you do not wish to renew it, you can let it expire. If you do not want to receive notifications, you can mark them as "Let expire" from the domain management panel. In this tab, you will find the "Renewal method" section, and by clicking on it, you can modify it.
What happens when renewing a domain in Redemption Period?
If you have requested the recovery of the domain you will have to wait between 24 and 48 hours for the domain to be recovered and renewed. Once active, you will have to wait a few hours for the domain's DNS to propagate through the network again because the domain had expired and the DNS were not active.
What happens if I don't renew the domain in Redemption Period?
If you decide not to recover the domain it will go to the following status of Pending delete. During this state, the domain cannot be renewed and if you want to register it, you will have to wait until the domain is deleted and released automatically.
